Personal Research Project (2008-2009)

Successful attempts at inserting the Ni2+ ion inside the cavity of 15-crown-5 (hereafter, 15C5) have been discussed for the compound [Ni(H2O)2(15C5)](NO3)2 in two recent papers (see link 1 and link 2 for more details). In the meantime, we developed interest in growing crystals of a similar compound containing the same cation, but with the hydrogen sulfate HSO4- counter anion instead.

One aim is to examine the effect of additional hydrogen-bond donors (one donor per HSO4- ion) on the crystal packing of [Ni(H2O)2(15C5)](HSO4)2. Another interest remains the comparisons of the Ni(II) coordination in the seven-coordinate pentagonal bypiramidal geometry in [Ni(H2O)2(15C5)](HSO4)2 with those observed in [M(H2O)2(15C5)](NO3)2 (M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn). Finally, we discovered a set of three related phases for this compound. The nature of the phase sequence is under investigation.
